My thoughts about Sabe', Obi-Wan, and the elusive but ever popular, at least with me, Sabe'/Obi-Wan 'ship.

I am a die-hard Sabe' fan, she is my favorite handmaiden. I see her as a creature of duty, responsible and focused, especially when others are counting on her. I would expect the stress of being the decoy really gets to her some times. Also, I bet that she has quite a sense of humor when she gets to let it out (or maybe I am reading myself into that there, hmm). I guess I really like her, because I can be lot like that in my own way. I can be a bit too much of the driven responsible leader-chica, and it knocks me over sometimes and I have to take time to regroup. I don't see Sabe' as being as unbalanced with her stress as I am... but I still identify. Also, she is willing to lay down her life for her friend and leader. I respect that, a great deal. I have never had to be in that position but I truly admire and appreciate that kind of loyalty and devotion for one's friends, etc. I guess the tendency for some of us, at least for me, is to favor the one we identify with and reminds us somehow of something within us.

About Obi-Wan Kenobi, I see him as being very devoted to the order and code, especially since he had his career sandwiched between life with Qui-Gon and Anakin, slightly roguish and unruly men in their own way (although I firmly believe that Anakin takes that a lot farther than Qui-Gon ever did). I do see him, though, as he ages, and especially by the time of AOTC, as being quite the risk-taker in his own right (you know, jumping headfirst out of windows that are hundreds upon hundreds of stories above the ground...) and developing his own bit of maverick-like tendencies (the mind trick in the bar for example). I admire the human side we see in him, his sense of humor in particular (and the fact that he hates flying!!!).

Sabe' the great decoy, Rabe', Sache', Padme', and Yane' (I think I have the identification for those behind the Queen and her decoy correct, but if anyone from RHS wants to correct me on that, feel free.)

With all that in mind, this is what I think about the Obi-Wan/Sabe' stuff... I read fan-fiction for a few different reasons: distraction, immersing myself in Star Wars-land, and fun. So sometimes I really don't care if some fiction is completely improbable and wacky and out of character. Sometimes I love that stuff, it's creative (and yes, sometimes annoying, but it is fun to mold characters into slightly different versions of themselves, you know?). Sometimes I don't. I don't think Obi-Wan/Sabe' is even remotely in character (especially given my analysis of the two above) for the two in TPM (even though I may read some of this fiction anyway). I like it when they have a friendship by the end of the ordeal, because I think they are similar in a lot of ways (creatures of duty and whatnot). I like when they develop into good friends with possibilities over the years, largely because I would hate to think of the poor guy never having any da-n companionship during his struggles over the years. I love his character, and his path is a lonely one so I like to, in fiction, lighten that load, you know? (Not that I really write that much, and never post, fiction. Hey, I'm a painter, not a writer, and I know it.) I don't see a good friendship leading to something more as a terrible mark against him as a Jedi, because I don't think loving a person has to be an attachment. Love can be given without needing possession of a person, and with balance, I think love (in my head at least) would fall into a more gray area of the 'no attachment' clause in the Jedi Code. Besides Knight Ki-Adi Mundi has wives if I do recall. I'm not saying I think Obi-Wan really runs around being some kind of Casanova swooning over the hot chicas of Naboo, but I don't think it's sooo-oh out of character to imagine him (or other Jedi) having a person to love in a careful and healthy manner. Maybe I am just off base in thinking that Jedi should be able to have life-mates in certain situations and cases. Maybe I am just a softie and romantic at heart. Maybe I just like to have my fan-fiction a little less realistic and less canon from time to time.

He catches my attention even when he's squinting into the sun.
I may have more to say about this at some point. Until then, go read some fan fiction or something!

I just added my first ever fan art attempt on the L's Fan Art page. Check it out, it features, yep you guessed it, Sabe' and Obi-Wan. ::smiles::
